Cam H Laughed and cried and loved Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Chris M An Oscar nominated coming of age story that still has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but to fair to the modern critics. They probably saw the PG-13 dumbed down version because the original unrated version had very creepy elements. I general call "didn't age well" a dumb buzz phrase but there are a creepy scene in the first movie that goes too far with kids that were 11 and 14 that I am very happy was cut out of the PG-13 version. It's suppose to be a comedy drama that forgets the most important part of comedy, the set up. A "funny" situation that's not properly set up is not funny. Lie a scene where Ingemar ran away and starts a fire to keep warm a quick cut has the entire field a blaze. How did that happen, did he throw the match away too close to dry leaves, a hot ember? What? That's like saying "Knock, Knock" but jump to "Orange you glad I didn't say banana." The original unrated version was eeeewy and boring. This is free of the ewww but it's still boring. Again ART is more important than story or characters. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/22 Full Review isla s This is a relatively pleasant nostalgic watch centering on a young boy called Ingemar. Its quite amusing at times, with some of the main characters relatives being, shall I say, a little eccentric in their own ways. It definitely highlights childhood innocence, certainly at the start. I liked the artistic performers that appear at times, including a man on a unicycle, on a high wire. Its a film that I imagine slightly older kids and adults may both find amusing and entertaining. I liked the soft lighting featured, giving it that extra feel of nostalgia. There are some instances of nudity and mild sex references but its nothing too explicit or graphic, hence the PG rating. I suppose thematically at most its perhaps about a young boy's first encounters, or curiosities, about sexuality and general curiosities about life and death but its not really a steamy sexual film as such, more a fairly mild film about a boy coming to feel the start of his impending adolescence at most, I suppose.I thought this film had a healthy charm to it generally and I quite enjoyed it, so I'd recommend it on that basis. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Christopher B A coming of age story with plenty of drama and real life scenarios but also one that has just enough humor in the right places to make it enjoyable. While the story itself is more true to life and not so perfect, that is what makes the film so wonderful and touching. The performances are amazing, especially that of Anton Glanzelius who gives a complex and amazingly real performance as a growing boy who is losing his mother, his lone provider and hero, and must learn to cope with it. He has an uncle who loves him very much who steps in and is the reason we are given hope and a sense of peace throughout and at the end of My Life as a Dog. Highly Recommended! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/25/22 Full Review david l My Life as a Dog is way too repetitive and obvious in its constantly repeated titular metaphor, but this is still a surprisingly thoughtful and dark coming-of-age tale that powerfully deals with important issues, such as child abuse and mistreatment. The narration was excessive, but great acting, directing and most of the writing helped it transcend those more familiar genre elements.
